Making baby food?

We are contemplating making our own baby food. I know that several of you in the blogosphere have done this. We have...very little idea where to start. We have a kickass blender that has a few recipes in the cookbook that came with it, but that's all.

How long does it keep?
Do we refrigerate or freeze it ahead of time?
How big of a batch do we make?
Are there certain foods that just don't make well?
What kind of foods should we make?
Is it really cheaper than buying baby food in the end? Because that's why we want to do this. Well, that and we know what goes into his food.

Help please!!!

I made ahead and froze in ice cube trays, then thawed a cube or two at a time.

Some things are easily made, like ripe, mashed banana, mashed avocado, a sweet potato microwaved and mashed.

Oh man, do I make babyfood.

Is it cheaper? Ish? But meats and veggies are SO much nicer homemade. Fruits are kind of the same either way.

You have a blendtec, so you can blend near anything. Careful of string beans, etc, they can bind up the blades.

Keeps about 3 months in the freezer, I'd not keep it in the fridge more than about 3 days.

Like Mrs S said - ice cube trays. They make a 1 oz portion per cube.

Start with small batches, maybe 1-2 pieces of fruit, see how far it gets you.

I'd start with the basics: apples, pears, peaches, bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, avacado.

It's really easy to do. Peel and chop your fruit, steam (except avacado and banana, those can go raw), toss in the blender. We steam in the microwave mostly because we're lazy like that. A dash of lemon juice on things that would brown keep them looking nice. You can thin them when you blend (you'll need to for veggies), or at serving time.

It CAN be fun.
